UnboxBoardom Review – Should You Subscribe to this Board Game Subscription Service?

Unbox Boardom Review

UnboxBoardom is our favorite subscription box service for adding newly released, unique, and “hot on the market” board games to our growing collection! So the question is, should you subscribe to this board game subscription service? We will go over everything you need to know in this UnboxBoardom Review!

UnboxBoardom differs from other board game subscription boxes we have tried in the past, as you are given a choice between three different games and your game choice will be sent right to your door! All three of the board game options are new or unique games that you probably haven’t heard about or have been waiting to add to your board game collection.

This board game subscription box service is a great way to try new board games and introduce different styles of board games to your collection that you might not have tried otherwise.

The best part? You get to keep the game! No sending the game back, it’s yours to add to your collection. Curious to learn more? We have everything you need to know in this UnboxBoardom review, so keep reading!

What is UnboxBoardom – UnboxBoardom Review?

UnboxBoardom offers a monthly treat for board game lovers who are looking to expand their inventory of board games and spice up their usual arsenal of games at game night.

In simple terms, UnboxBoardom is a subscription board game service, where you pay a monthly fee to receive new board games. Depending on the subscription option you choose (more on this in a bit), you will either receive a new board game every month, every two months, or every three months.

The best part is that you never have to worry about receiving a game that you already have, because UnboxBoardom allows you to choose which board game you would like to receive before your box ships.

The UnboxBoardom Subscription box from Cratejoy includes everything from strategic board games, tabletop card games, and fun party games.

How to Get Started With UnboxBoardom

We will dive into our experience receiving our very own UnboxBoardom box, but before we do that, we just wanted to go over how easy it is to start a subscription and the different options you have to choose from before starting your UnboxBoardom subscription.

To start a subscription with UnboxBoardom, you will need to head over to the cratejoy website where the UnboxBoardom subscriptions are located. Once there, you can select from the three featured subscription options:

  1. Board Game Beginner: In the board game beginner subscription box, you will receive four new board games over the course of the year. This means that you will get the opportunity to choose one new game to be delivered to your door every three months for the duration of your subscription.
  2. Casual Gamer: The casual gamer box is the “middle man” subscription option giving you one new game every two months. That equals six new board games over the course of a year, two more than the beginner box!
  3. Gaming Guru: UnboxBoardom’s preferred box is the Gaming Guru subscription. This box gives you one new game every month making TWELVE new board games over the course of a year! That’s double the Casual box and a new game each month to change up your game night routine! (this is the one we selected)

Along with the three Subscription options, UnboxBoardom offers two options for payment. One of which will save you some money in the long run! The two payment options are:

  1. Pay-as-you-go: With pay-as-you-go, you will have the flexibility to choose a new board game every month of your subscription plan and cancel anytime you’d like.
  2. Annual Pre-Pay Subscription: The annual pre-pay plan will save you some money in each month’s subscription. Pre-pay offers a discounted rate on your box, the more games you pre-pay, the larger the discount! This is considered the best valued option and the one we decided to choose.

Once you choose a subscription and enter your payment details, you will receive an email that will give you your choice of three different board games! Choices will range from family board games to strategy board games and more.

You will receive this email each month of your subscription (depending on which option you choose), allowing you to choose your favorite option each month.

Choosing Your Game After Subscribing

The awesome thing about this board game subscription box is that you have the option to preview and choose from three board game selections! If you are an avid board gamer like us, have no fear! With UnboxBoardom, you never have to worry about getting a game you already have.

These games are usually unique and “hot on the market” board games and more often than not, they are some you haven’t heard of or own yet! If you do happen to own them all or aren’t interested in the game selections, don’t worry, there’s another option, but more on that later.

UnboxBoard Review of Our Three Games

Below are the three game choices we were given when ordering our box. You will see that UnboxBoardom provides helpful information making it super easy to pick the perfect board game to fit your gaming needs!

Each board game description clearly states the player count and play time as well as UnboxBoardom’s Family Friendly, Strategy Involved, and Party Starter ratings! As board gamers who like a wide variety of play styles, we really appreciate the effort put in by UnboxBoardom to provide all the information needed to choose the right board game.

Having the answers to all of our questions answered in one spot takes away the need to do our own research of the game, making selecting our desired game that much easier.

See below for the three games that we were prompted to choose from when starting our subscription!

Choice #1: Periodic: A Game of the Elements

The first game to choose from was called, Periodic: A Game of the Elements. It’s a game for 2-5 players that is family friendly and involves quite a bit of strategy. It was also considered a “party starter” and play time lasts around 40 minutes.

Here is UnboxBoardom’s description of the game:

“In this set collection chemistry-themed game, you will be using different elements to create various compounds to achieve goals and collect victory points. You can spend energy to move your piece throughout the periodic table or around the research track. The conservation of energy forces players to spend carefully and play efficiently. You must score and collect different goals before your opponents. And the great news is no science skills are actually required, but you may accidentally learn something as it is scientifically accurate! Be careful!”

Choice #2: Watergate

The next game choice, Watergate, is a game for 2 players that is a little less family friendly and involves a lot more strategy. It can be played in about 30-60 minutes.

Here is UnboxBoardom’s description of the game:

“When you’re tired of all the talk in the news about politics and impeachment, it might be nice to think back to a simpler time, 1972, when the news was only about…Watergate? (wait, what!?). In this two-player game, one player will play as the Nixon administration, while the other side represents the journalists trying to connect the political scandal to the President. Each side will get an asymmetrical 20 card deck and take turns playing cards in order to gather (or destroy) evidence to connect Nixon to his informants. For an added bonus, there is a separate booklet detailing the historical events (“See mom, I’m not playing a game, I’m learning!”)”

Choice #3: Fort

The final option, Fort, is a deck building board game for 2-4 players that can be played in about 20-40 minutes. It is family friendly, involves some strategy, AND is considered a party starter.

Here is UnboxBoardom’s description of the game:

“In Fort, you are (you guessed it!) buildings forts! In addition to that, in this game you are kids that are doing, well, kid things — making friends, eating pizza, and of course, collecting toys! When you perform these different actions you will gain victory points. However, you will have some interesting decisions to make along the way. Will you stick to yourself and only focus on building your own board, or will you “follow the leader” and copy what your friends are doing? What may seem like a simple deck-building game at first is actually loaded with strategy. But don’t worry we aren’t trying to sneak in some hidden educational value in this one (unless you count fort construction as educational :))”

Wondering which game we chose for our UnboxBoardom Review?

We decided to go with the last option, Fort! We chose the game Fort for our first UnboxBoardom subscription box because of its obviously fun energy and theme. We couldn’t resist the chance to channel our long lost childhood, chow down on some pizza and build some, well, FORTS of course!

Unbox Boardom Review

Our UnboxBoardom Review of Fort

After receiving our first box from UnboxBoardom that included the board game, Fort, we immediately opened it up to see the contents. The game came in a nicely packed box with a sincerely written welcome letter from the UnboxBoardom CEO himself! How cool!

The board game was brand new in packaging, just as we expected, and we were excited to open it up and start playing. We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the game and the fun gameplay! We feel like Fort was a great option to have available to subscribers and we really enjoyed the gameplay.

What if I don’t want any of the featured games that month?

With having to choose between three games each month, we know that this can be an issue with some people as the featured games that month may not catch their eye or they may already own all of the games. So the question is, what if you do not want any of the featured games that month?

UnboxBoardom clearly states on their site that they never want you to receive a game you’re not excited about! They are more than happy to work with you and will either provide you with a past game that is still available in their inventory to send you as an alternative, or they will push your subscription back a month for you to be able to choose from the next month’s options.

We are always looking for a new game to add to our collection as well as staying on top of the latest trends for new board games. With the board game industry growing larger every day, it’s easy to miss a lot of great games that come out simply because there are too many to keep track of! This to us is our favorite thing about UnboxBoardom.

They are on top of the trends and new releases, therefore giving us the inside scoop on what’s new and exciting in the board gaming community. Their slogan is that UnboxBoardom delivers the “Hottest, brand-new board games delivered right to your door to keep.” We believe that UnboxBoardom delivers on their promise.

Another great reason to love UnboxBoardom and an added bonus to hopping on board (see what we did there) is that for every 10 new subscribers that sign up for a subscription through their site, the team at UnboxBoardom donates a game to kids who can’t afford their own! How awesome is that?!

The only thing we could think of that might be a downside for some gamers is that some months the three board game options might be games you already own or games that you are really not interested in. As we stated above, UnboxBoardom is willing and ready to go above and beyond to make sure you are satisfied with your board game selection, but for some that might be a bit of hassle.

UnboxBoardom Review Final Thoughts

If you are an avid board gamer looking to experience something new and fresh to spice up your game nights, we feel like UnboxBoardom would be a great fit for you to be able to try new games that you may not normally pick to play. Along with being a great way to grow your board game collection, the subscription price of UnboxBoardom is more often than not significantly cheaper than retail price for most of the games available. That’s money saved in your pockets!
