Chips and store bought dips are a quick solution for last minute game night adventures, but over here at the Game Night God headquarters, we like to step it up a notch! All you need is a couple of simple ingredients and a few hours of chill time, and BAM! You have yourself a homemade taco dip that will be gone in the blink of an eye! (We’re not lying. One time I winked at Hillary and missed out on the goods)

BRING ON MOMS TACO DIP!

Because every great recipe comes from your mom right?

When we said this recipe is simple, we meant it. You don’t need a bunch of fancy ingredients to pack a flavor punch. Unless you consider cream cheese fancy, in that case, you’re in for a delectable delight. Just make sure you do a little pre-planning to account for the “chill time”.

What you’ll need:

  • Mixing bowl with a lid
  • Hand mixer or Whisk (and a bit of muscle)
  • Spatula
  • Shallow dish
  • Small Spoon

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 Container Sour Cream
  • 1 Pack Room Temperature Cream Cheese
  • 1 Packet Taco Seasoning
  • 2 Cups Shredded Lettuce
  • 1 Cup Shredded Cheese (we prefer sharp cheddar)
  • 1/4 Cup Salsa
  • Tortilla Chips

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1: Take the Cream Cheese out of the refrigerator so that it can come to room temperature. You want the cream cheese soft because if its too cold and solid, you’re gonna have a bad time with your mixer.

Step 2: Once the Cream Cheese has softened, add it to your mixing bowl along with the Sour Cream and Taco Seasoning.

Step 3: Using your hand mixer (or brute strength and whisk), start combining the ingredients. Be sure to start at the lowest setting and work your way up as to avoid a KITCHEN NIGHTMARE!!

Step 4: Once the Cream Cheese, Sour Cream and Taco Seasoning are well mixed, Place the lid on the mixing bowl and place it in the refrigerator to chill. This step is important for the mixture to set and the flavors to “meld” or how Branden likes to call it, “marinade” .

Step 5: After allowing the mixture to set for a couple of hours, remove from fridge. Using your spatula, spread an even layer of the taco mixture into the shallow dish. You can spread this layer as thick or as thin as you’d like. We prefer a thinner layer of the taco mixture, to even out the ratio of taco mixture and toppings. This also allows for addition dips to be made. (Score!)

Step 6: Next, use a small spoon to dollop the salsa sporadically around the dish. Again, use as much or as little as you’d like!

Step 7: Sprinkle on the shredded lettuce,

Followed by the Shredded Cheese. We have a heavy hand when it comes to this step. The more cheese the better right??

And Voila! Your taco dip is complete and ready to eat! If you’re not serving immediately, place the shallow dish in the fridge until you’re ready to go. We prefer these Tortilla Chips because they’re great for dipping!

Mom’s Super Simple Taco Dip

Prep Time: 10 mins + Couple Hours | Servings: 1-2 Trays |

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 Container Sour Cream
  • 1 Pack Room Temperature Cream Cheese
  • 1 Packet Taco Seasoning
  • 2 Cups Shredded Lettuce
  • 1 Cup Shredded Cheese (we prefer sharp cheddar)
  • 1/4 Cup Salsa
  • Tortilla Chips

Directions:

  1. Once your Cream Cheese has come to room temperature, place in mixing bowl with the container of sour cream.
  2. Add your packet of Taco Seasoning.
  3. Use your hand mixer to combine ingredients. Be sure to star at the lowest setting and work your way up as to avoid a kitchen disaster. If you don’t have a hand mixer, this is where you would use your wisk and biceps!
  4. When the cream cheese, sour cream and taco seasoning are well combined, place lid on the mixing bowl and place in the refrigerator to chill for a few hours. (If you’re short on time you can move on to the next step but we recommend chilling this part of the recipe so that it can set up and the flavors can come together.)
  5. After chilling for a bit you can assemble the dip! Using your spatula, spread an even layer on the bottom of your shallow dish.
  6. Next add your salsa. We recommend using a small spoon to help disperse it around.
  7. Once your salsa has been added, its time to add the lettuce.
  8. Finally generously sprinkle your cheese of choice evenly around the dish and voila! You’re ready to dig in!

Recipe notes:

Depending on the size of your dish and the thickness you prefer of the taco mixture, this recipe may make multiple dips.

A stand mixer can be used in place of a hand mixer.

Chopped tomatoes can be used in place of salsa, but we’re all for saving time and adding a little extra pizzazz!
